If you’re up late with a toothache, swelling, or a broken tooth, here’s what to do right now, and where to go next.
Desert Hills Dental is not a 24-hour office. We hold time in the schedule for same-day emergency appointments, so the plan for most late-night problems is to protect the tooth tonight and call us when the office opens.
Is your dental issue urgent?
When the office is open, call us for a same-day visit if you have any of these. When it’s closed, check the emergency room cases further down first.
- Throbbing tooth pain that won’t let you sleep
- Swelling in your cheek, jaw, or gums
- A knocked-out or badly broken tooth
- Bleeding that won’t stop
- Pain after a recent dental procedure
- Signs of infection, like fever, a bump on the gum, or a bitter taste in your mouth
MedlinePlus says a swollen upper or lower jaw is a very serious symptom of a tooth abscess (reviewed February 2026). If the office is closed, take that one to an emergency room.
What to do right now (even if we’re closed)
These steps buy you time. They don’t fix the cause.
- Toothache: rinse with warm water, floss gently to clear any trapped food, and don’t put aspirin on the tooth or gum. MedlinePlus says aspirin there irritates the tissue and can cause mouth ulcers. An over-the-counter pain reliever can help if you can’t see a dentist right away (MedlinePlus).
- Swelling: hold a cold compress on the outside of your cheek. If it affects your breathing or your jaw is swollen, go to an emergency room.
- Knocked-out adult tooth: pick it up by the chewing edge, never the root, and don’t scrub or wipe the root. Set it back in the socket if you can. If not, keep it in a little milk or saliva, or between your lower lip and gum. MedlinePlus says the longer you wait, the less chance there is to fix it. If the office is closed, go to an emergency room.
- Cracked or broken tooth: rinse your mouth with warm water and hold a cold compress on your face to keep swelling down.

What if I need care right now?
Go to the nearest emergency room if swelling affects your breathing, your jaw is swollen or may be broken, an adult tooth has been knocked out, or bleeding won’t stop. The ADA says that if an accident happens when your dental office is closed, you should visit your local emergency room. If you can’t close your teeth together after an injury, your jaw may be broken, and MedlinePlus says that needs help right away at a dentist’s office or hospital.
