New to Enterprise or Southern Highlands? What to Bring to Your First Dental Checkup

Moving to a new part of the valley means rebuilding your short list. A grocery store. A mechanic. A dentist. If you just landed in Enterprise or Southern Highlands, the dentist is usually the one that slides until a tooth starts complaining.

Our office sits at 6740 S Fort Apache Rd, Suite 100, in the 89148 zip code of Southwest Las Vegas, near Rhodes Ranch. Patients come up from Enterprise and Southern Highlands every week, most of them straight up Fort Apache or off the 215 beltway. Here is what to bring to your first dental checkup with us, and what happens once you are in the chair.

What to bring to your first checkup

You do not need much. Five things cover it.

  • A photo ID, such as a driver’s license.
  • Your dental insurance card if you have one. We verify benefits before your visit and file the claims for you.
  • A list of your current medications and doses, including supplements. Several common medications cause dry mouth, which changes what we watch for.
  • Your most recent dental X-rays or records from your previous office, if you can get them.
  • Your questions, written down. The tooth that twinges with iced water. The crown that feels rough. Small details help.

How to get records from your old dentist

Call your previous office and ask them to send your records and X-rays to Desert Hills Dental. Most offices can email digital files quickly. If your X-rays are recent, we can often use them instead of taking new ones.

Could not track them down in time? That is fine. We take digital X-rays in the office, and nobody gets turned away for arriving empty handed.

What happens during the first visit

First visits run a little longer than routine ones. We start with digital X-rays, then use an intraoral camera so you can see your own teeth on the screen while we talk. Dr. Deborah Staten examines your teeth, gums, and bite, and goes through every item on your list.

Before any treatment happens, you get a written treatment plan with the costs listed up front, so nothing surprises you at checkout. If everything looks healthy, you leave with clean teeth and a date for your next regular dental checkup. If something turns up, like a cracked molar, we have CEREC same-day restorations and cone beam CT imaging in the office, so most treatment stays under one roof.

If cost is the concern

Say so at the front desk, because there are options. We verify insurance benefits and file the claims. CareCredit and Cherry offer third-party financing that splits treatment into monthly payments. And for patients without insurance, the Desert Hills Dental Complete care plan is a flat-fee membership that covers routine exams, cleanings, and X-rays, plus a discount on other treatment.

When a treatment plan runs longer than your budget, we phase it. Urgent work first, the rest scheduled over time. The written plan makes that easy to map out together.

One thing the desert does to your mouth

If you moved here from somewhere humid, your mouth will notice before you do. Las Vegas air holds very little moisture, and many new residents experience dry mouth for the first time, especially through the hot summer months. Less saliva means less natural protection for your teeth. Mention that you are new to the desert at your first visit and we will keep an eye on it.

Booking around a new routine

Our hours fit a workweek. Monday through Thursday we open at 7am and close at 4pm, and Friday we run 8am to 1pm. A 7am appointment gets plenty of Enterprise and Southern Highlands commuters in and out before the workday starts. If you want a read on us first, we have more than 700 Google reviews with a 4.9 star average.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need my old dental records before my first checkup?

No. Records help, especially recent X-rays, but they are not required. Call your previous office and ask them to send your files to Desert Hills Dental before your visit. If nothing arrives in time, we take digital X-rays in the office and start a fresh chart for you that day.

What if I have not seen a dentist in a few years?

You will not get a lecture. Gaps happen, especially around a move or an insurance change. Expect a thorough first exam, a full set of digital X-rays, and honest priorities. The written treatment plan separates urgent work from things that can wait, and treatment can be phased over time when budget is a concern.

How far is your office from Enterprise and Southern Highlands?

We are at 6740 S Fort Apache Rd, Suite 100, Las Vegas, NV 89148, in Southwest Las Vegas near Rhodes Ranch. From most of Enterprise, it is a straight drive up Fort Apache. From Southern Highlands, the 215 beltway brings you into the southwest valley quickly. We also see patients from Spring Valley, Summerlin, Paradise, and The Lakes.

What are my options if I do not have dental insurance?

Ask about the Desert Hills Dental Complete care plan, a flat-fee membership for patients without insurance that covers routine exams, cleanings, and X-rays and includes a discount on other treatment. CareCredit and Cherry financing can spread larger costs into monthly payments. Either way, you see the full plan in writing before anything starts.

Why is my mouth so dry since moving to Las Vegas?

Desert air holds very little humidity, and many people notice dry mouth within their first months in the Las Vegas valley. Some common medications make it worse. Saliva protects your teeth, so a drier mouth can raise your cavity risk. Bring it up at your checkup and we will suggest ways to manage it.
