How Often Should You Really Get a Dental Cleaning? A Spring Valley Dentist’s Answer
Twice a year. That is the answer most people expect when they ask how often a dental cleaning is really needed, and for many of our patients it is the right one. But it is not the whole answer. Some mouths stay healthy on two visits a year. Others need three or four to keep gum disease from coming back. At our office on S Fort Apache Rd in Spring Valley, the schedule we recommend depends on what we see in your mouth, not on a rule written for everyone.
Where the six month rule comes from
Six months is a guideline, and a decent one for healthy adults with low cavity risk. The reasoning is simple. Plaque stays soft and brushable for about a day. After that it hardens into tartar, and no toothbrush removes tartar. It has to be scaled off with instruments at a cleaning. For a person with healthy gums, six months is a short enough window that tartar never gets far enough to cause real trouble.
The guideline breaks down when your risk runs higher than average. A lot of Las Vegas patients fall into that group without knowing it.
Who should come in more often
If you have had gum disease, the interval changes. After a deep cleaning, most patients move to maintenance visits every three to four months, because the bacteria behind gum disease rebuild in roughly that window. Stretching those visits back out to six months is the most common way we watch treated gum disease return.
Other reasons we shorten the schedule:
- Diabetes
- Smoking or vaping
- Pregnancy
- Braces or clear aligners
- A history of frequent cavities
- Dry mouth
Dry mouth deserves its own paragraph in this town. The desert air across Southwest Las Vegas holds very little moisture, and plenty of everyday medications, blood pressure and allergy pills among them, cut saliva on top of that. Saliva washes away food debris and neutralizes acid all day long. With less of it, cavities and gum problems pick up speed. Patients who run dry, especially through the hot summer months, often do better on a three or four month schedule.
What a cleaning at our office looks like
A routine visit for regular check-ups and cleanings takes about an hour. Your hygienist measures your gums, scales away the tartar your toothbrush could not reach, and polishes. We take digital X-rays when you are due for them. If we find something worth showing you, an intraoral camera puts it on the screen so you see exactly what we see. Dr. Deborah Staten checks your teeth and gums before you head out.
We open at 7am Monday through Thursday, which matters if you commute. Plenty of patients from Rhodes Ranch and Southern Highlands take the first slot of the day and still make it to work on time.
If it has been years since your last cleaning
No lectures here. Life gets busy, people move to Las Vegas from out of state, insurance changes, and the years slide past. Your first visit back is an exam, X-rays, and gum measurements, so we know exactly where you stand. If your gums need a deeper cleaning before a routine one makes sense, we will show you why on the screen. Either way you leave with a written treatment plan that lists costs up front, and treatment can be phased over time when budget is tight.
Paying for cleanings
We are insurance friendly. The front desk verifies your benefits before you come in and files the claims for you. If you do not carry dental insurance, our in-house membership handles the routine side of care, and CareCredit and Cherry financing can spread out larger treatment. You can read about everything we offer on our full list of dental services. Nobody should skip cleanings over money before talking to us about the options.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I really get a dental cleaning if nothing hurts?
For most healthy adults, every six months. Gum disease and small cavities rarely hurt early on, so a mouth that feels fine can still have problems building quietly. At your cleaning we measure your gums, review your history, and give you a straight recommendation. For some patients that is six months. For others a shorter interval protects them better.
Does the dry Las Vegas air really affect my teeth?
It can. Very low humidity dries the mouth, and many common prescriptions make it worse by reducing saliva. Saliva is your mouth’s natural defense, rinsing away food and buffering acid between meals. When it drops, decay and gum irritation tend to progress faster. If your mouth often feels dry, tell us at your next visit. We may recommend cleanings more often than twice a year.
What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar above and just below the gumline and is meant for healthy gums. A deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, treats gum disease by cleaning well below the gumline, usually with numbing, over one or two visits. After a deep cleaning most patients switch to maintenance cleanings every three to four months to keep the disease from returning.
How do I afford cleanings if I do not have dental insurance?
Our Desert Hills Dental Complete care plan is a flat-fee membership built for patients without insurance. It covers routine exams, cleanings, and X-rays, and it discounts other treatment. CareCredit and Cherry financing are also available. Before any work starts you get a written treatment plan with costs listed up front, and we can phase treatment over time when budget is a concern.
How long does a cleaning appointment take at your office?
Plan on about an hour for a routine cleaning, a little longer for a first visit that includes digital X-rays and a full exam with Dr. Staten. We open at 7am Monday through Thursday, so many patients from Summerlin and Enterprise book before work. On Fridays we see patients from 8am to 1pm. Call ahead and we will find a slot that fits your commute.
