What is a tooth filling?
A filling is a simple restoration procedure primarily used to restore cavities or other mild decay or deterioration. Fillings are extremely common and have a high success rate. We offer composite fillings because they are tooth-colored and appear more natural.
What are dental sealants?
Sealants are a thin coating painted on teeth to protect them from cavities, they are typically used in children but can be used in adults as well. This preventative treatment lowers the chances of developing cavities in the deep chewing surfaces of your back teeth. Because these grooves, pits, and fissures are narrow and difficult to clean with a toothbrush, they’re some of the areas that develop cavities first. Just another reason why attending routine dental checkups is so important! By placing sealants over your chewing surfaces, we essentially create a shallower area that’s smoother and easier to clean with a toothbrush. That way, little to no residual bacteria is left inside the grooves following your typical brushing routine. Sealants are a quick and affordable option to prevent cavities and tooth fillings.

What types of filling materials are available?
At Desert Hills Family Dental, we offer a variety of filling materials to suit different needs and preferences. These include amalgam (silver fillings), which are durable and cost-effective; composite resins, which match the color of your teeth for a more natural appearance; and porcelain or ceramic fillings, known for their strength and stain resistance. We also provide glass ionomer fillings, which release fluoride to help protect the tooth from further decay. Our team can help you choose the best material based on the location of your cavity, the extent of the decay, aesthetic considerations, and budget.

How long does a dental sealant last?
Dental sealants can last up to 10 years with proper care and regular dental check-ups. However, it’s important to have your dentist check the integrity of the sealants during routine visits, as they can sometimes wear down or chip over time.

Who qualifies for dental sealants?
Dental sealants are typically recommended for children and teenagers as they are most prone to cavities in the depressions and grooves of their premolars and molars. However, adults without decay or fillings in their molars can also benefit from sealants. Sealants are an effective preventive measure to protect teeth from decay, especially for individuals who are at higher risk for dental caries.
